It’s really interesting to see what life was like for those serving on an American aircraft carrier during World War II as it battled against Japan. Robert Taylor provides narration, and he guides us through the inner workings of this massive ship—a wooden-decked vessel filled with thousands of people and vast amounts of supplies, food, weapons, and gear. The film details how carefully everything was managed and how operations were conducted. There's a good amount of actual footage from the time showing planes launching and landing, which really highlights just how risky it was to live on these ships. It’s definitely a patriotic movie—intended to celebrate the efforts of those in service for audiences at home, and in that respect, it succeeds. I do think the narration could have been better; Taylor's delivery became somewhat monotonous after a while, and he probably should have let the visuals speak more. The way the action footage is woven together with scenes of vulnerable planes, rough seas, and combat does effectively convey how hazardous their everyday existence was. It might feel a little bit stiff, but that’s not unexpected considering when it was produced.
