A little too subdued in its color scheme. Dick Tracy comes from director Warren Beatty and writers Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr.. Drawing from Chester Gould’s comic strip of the same name, the film features Beatty alongside Al Pacino, Madonna, Glenne Headly, Dustin Hoffman, Charlie Korsmo, Charles Durning and William Forsythe. The musical score is by Danny Elfman, with songs composed by Stephen Sondheim, and cinematography by Vittorio Storaro. The band X-Ray Spex once sang about a world saturated in bright colors, and Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy was precisely that. This live action cartoon provides a visual spectacle; the city setting for this story of cops and gangsters bursts with vivid, intense primary hues. The characters are exceptionally well-designed, where the heroes feel like real people, but the antagonists resemble a collection of bizarre creatures united under one banner. With its impressive cast, striking costumes, remarkable special effects, quality songs, and an energetic musical score (Elfman revisits his Batman music from the previous year), Dick Tracy is top-tier production work. It also performed well at the box office, earning over $100 million in worldwide profit, despite not quite meeting Disney’s financial goals—a surprising result for a film some still consider unsuccessful. It's a film that seems more impressive now than it did when it was first released, allowing one to appreciate it as an ingenious technical achievement of its time. The star-studded cast adds to the experience, watching established actors like Pacino and Hoffman fully embrace the cartoonish style on display. However, a persistent issue remains. While the plot is straightforward—easily accepted given that this is a family-friendly gangster film—Beatty’s interpretation of Tracy feels too restrained. He's presented as a good guy, and we root for him, but his character lacks depth; he never seems to be anything more than a cool figure. This allows the monstrous villains to dominate the movie, which often happens anyway, but one expects more from Dick Tracy himself, considering the film bears his name. Despite this, Dick Tracy is an enjoyable film, not everything it could have been, but fun nonetheless. 7/10
