Wuchak on Five Guns West

5/10 · Apr 12, 2021

Just before the Civil War concluded in Texas, five previously incarcerated men are released from prison and tasked with a risky assignment: tracking down a defector and recovering a cache of gold. Mike “Mannix” Connors portrays one of these individuals, while Dorothy Malone appears as one of two residents at a stagecoach stop. John Lund also has a role. "Five Guns West," made in 1955, falls into the category of B Westerns and marks the first film directed by Roger Corman, an influential independent filmmaker. It’s not terrible, and it's fortunate that it was filmed in color. However, the locations depicted seem inaccurate, and a reference to 1867 seems odd considering the war ended in 1865. The movie shares some elements with "Hangman's Knot" from 1952, but has enough distinctions to be considered unique; though it doesn’t have the same resources and isn’t quite as effective. The story centers on the conflicts between the five ex-convicts and their competition for the woman’s attention. The film’s length is 1 hour and 17 minutes, and filming took place at Jack Ingram Ranch (in Woodland Hills) and Iverson Ranch (in Chatsworth), both located in northwest Los Angeles. GRADE: C+
