I’ve always struggled to accept Rock Hudson in roles that demand a rougher edge; he just never fully sells it – his image is simply too polished to be believable in dirty clothes or during a brawl. Here, he plays the sheriff ("Chuck") pursuing an old friend, Dean Martin ("Billy"), who seems almost lightheartedly involved in helping robbers steal from a train. Shortly after that event, circumstances worsen and Hudson finds himself tracking Martin while a local group also pursues them both. The plot isn't particularly intricate, but the leads—along with Susan Clark, who portrays Hudson’s wife with spirit—deliver a western adventure that moves along at a good speed. Rumor has it the actors had a competitive dynamic during filming, though this doesn't negatively impact the movie itself; it's an acceptable, if not particularly memorable, 100 minutes.
