Peter McGinn on Carol of the Bells

6/10 · Mar 3, 2023

If you're searching for a holiday film that goes against expectations—specifically one that is overwhelmingly sad—then this might be what you want. Women should have tissues ready, and men may want their phones handy as a way to cope with the somber storyline. It’s striking how an upbeat holiday song is used to emphasize such a deeply sorrowful historical account; it would be like pairing Percy Faith's cheerful rendition of "We Need a Little Christmas" with a film about a disaster at a Christmas coal mine. I am certain that the narrative accurately portrays a tragedy brought on by Nazi and Russian actions, affecting these families before and during World War II. The production quality is good, but I’m really thankful I watched it well after the holidays had passed, instead of, for example, between "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Elf." The narrative makes it even more confusing that so many people appear to desire living under authoritarian rule. Maybe they aren’t seeing the full scope of what happened with the Nazis, but only the early days when things seemed orderly and those in power shared their dislikes. See this movie, if you still have time to do so with a receptive and inquisitive attitude.
