Joan Crawford delivers a captivating performance in this tight, subtly unsettling story. She portrays the titular character, George’s wife (played by Wendell Corey), appearing outwardly as a woman comfortably provided for. However, her true nature reveals a manipulative individual who orchestrates the lives of those around her—her husband, her cousin Claire (K.T. Stevens), and even the household staff become pieces in her schemes. The situation escalates when George is offered a promotion to Tokyo. She refuses to allow this move, persuading him to decline by fabricating a story about his gambling problem, which she claims only she can manage. A series of events then allows him to uncover her deceptions, leading to a dramatic confrontation involving her cousin and the housekeeper’s departure—a sequence that casts doubt on any affection they once shared. The score composed by Vincent Sherman and George Duning effectively amplifies the suspense, culminating in a suitably impactful resolution. Lucile Watson has a brief but memorable appearance as his boss's wife, seemingly perceptive of much of what is happening, and the film manages to pack a great deal into its 90-minute running time, making it an enjoyable experience.
