A stabbing in Paris prompts the arrival of “Dr. Ordway” (Warner Baxter), who is asked by a police acquaintance to look into the matter. The victim’s son quickly becomes a person of interest, though he seems detached from what's happening and uncertain about events. He admits to being angry with his father because of his disapproval regarding his recent marriage – to the daughter of someone involved in cabaret performance. As “Ordway” applies his unconventional investigative techniques, it appears that the murder might be connected to a larger scheme involving fake versions of well-known artworks. The film feels fairly standard and foreseeable as a thriller, suffering from an excess of dialogue and some noticeably poor French accents – all presented by actors (including Baxter) who don't seem very engaged. It also delves into adolescent psychology in a somewhat awkward way compared to other "Crime Doctor" films, and certain conclusions feel like a bit of a reach. While it attempts to elevate the genre, there isn’t sufficient action or intrigue to make up for its shortcomings.
