CinemaSerf on Who Killed Teddy Bear?

7/10 · Nov 20, 2024

The initial moments of the film possess an unusual eroticism, particularly in a scene where "Larry" (Sal Mineo), dressed revealingly, engages in suggestive conversation over the phone with a woman. While not overtly explicit by today’s standards, the movie adopts a frank perspective on the challenges confronting "Norah" (Juliet Prowse) as she grows increasingly troubled by this mysterious man and his escalating actions. She informs the police, who assign "Lt. Madden" (Jan Murray) to investigate; it soon becomes apparent that he has a personal connection to the situation—but can she rely on him? As her stalker’s behavior extends into her workplace, her supervisor, "Marian" (Elaine Stritch), attempts to offer reassurance, but will anything prevent what seems like an unavoidable attack? This is a skillfully constructed scenario of sexually charged pursuit, with the performances being captivating as the narrative unfolds. Even though the audience identifies the perpetrator early on, uncertainty lingers regarding the story’s resolution and whether he's the sole individual seeking to harass "Norah." The conclusion feels somewhat underwhelming; it doesn't quite live up to the preceding tension. Nevertheless, Prowse portrays her frightened character effectively, and Mineo brings a disconcerting blend of youthful innocence and predatory menace to his role. It’s an impactful ninety minutes of film that I believe was remarkably progressive for its era.
