Wuchak on Dreamaniac

3/10 · Dec 14, 2024

This is a fairly basic cabin-in-the-woods movie with a supernatural twist. A young musician and writer leases a house to focus on his work, but his girlfriend decides to host a party for her sorority along with guys from a fraternity. The situation turns bad when a succubus shows up at the gathering. “Dreamaniac,” made in 1986, was the director’s debut feature film and was initially titled “Succubus.” However, that name was changed after "A Nightmare on Elm Street" became popular, which explains the tagline: ‘You don't have to live on Elm Street to have a nightmare.’ While it begins with a disturbing dream sequence and has some odd moments similar to that movie and its sequels, at its core it’s a slasher film set in a remote house, only this one features a succubus as the villain. The main issue is that the story feels repetitive. The entire plot unfolds within the same house, primarily during nighttime scenes, which is likely due to the limited budget of $60,000—roughly $176,000 when adjusted for inflation. Consequently, whatever happens in the house needs to be captivating enough to hold the audience's attention, but unfortunately, it doesn’t quite succeed. The film's 80s aesthetic is a strong point, and the gore effects are well-executed if that kind of thing appeals to you. There are also several attractive women in the cast, including Kim McKamy as Pat (also credited as Ashlyn Gere), Sylvia Summers as Lily, and Linda Watts as Jan (also known as Linda Denise Martin). A few characters are intentionally annoying, like Cynthia Crass as Francis. However, these minor strengths are overshadowed by an excessive amount of male nudity, which isn't entirely unexpected given the director’s preferences. Ultimately, the good aspects aren't enough to justify investing the time. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 22 minutes and was filmed in Los Angeles. GRADE: C-/D+
