What I appreciate most about the Mill Creek ‘Classic Romances’ collection I bought recently—even though I already had two of these sets from an earlier Mill Creek Rita Hayworth compilation (they were inexpensive, so I didn’t complain much at the time)—is that it gave me three more of Judy Holliday's nine movies before her death at age 43 due to breast cancer. I was already fond of her performances in films like 'Adam's Rib', 'Phffft', 'The Solid Gold Cadillac,' and, naturally, her Oscar-winning role—which stood out among a very competitive field—in 'Born Yesterday.' However, this film presented a rather unexpected dramatic side to one of my favorite American actresses, who is generally recognized for her comedic skills. I won’t reveal any plot points, but there's a moment when she collapses emotionally after something awful happens that genuinely affected me; it’s a sadly overlooked and unappreciated piece of work. I know director Cukor often receives criticism because he was essentially categorized as a 'women's director,' and even got dismissed from ‘Gone with the Wind’ due to disagreements with his producer, but he certainly had a knack for crafting strong scenes, especially when working from a good script—I enjoy films I’ve seen by Garson Kanin, both those he made with and without his wife Ruth Gordon (who is most famous as the titular character in the cult film 'Harold and Maude')—and this was undoubtedly one of them. The movie certainly warrants renewed attention today; it's truly that good.
