I’m struggling to find a better word than strange to capture what this unusual film is like. The most distinctive narrative unfolds at a school overseen by the impeccably dressed "Jan Stevens" (Gwendoline Christie). Each year, she brings together a group for her private school where they combine real food items with audio technology and cooking methods to produce something I believe they call an “alimentary performance.” Honestly, I wasn’t entirely sure what was going on either, but as the story progresses, it becomes apparent that this is just the beginning. The collective of sound artists is guided by "Lamina" (Ariana Labed), alongside "Elle"(Fatma Mohamed) and a character named "Billy" (Asa Butterfield) sporting an abundance of fringe, and it’s not long before their connection to the host becomes clear, with Billy ending up in her bed. I still wasn't really grasping what was intended – particularly when one of the devices they were using for the sound mix disappeared, only to be found in a display case within a bedroom, from which an attempt is made to recover it. To complicate matters further, another group who weren’t selected to attend the school are plotting to kill "Miss Stevens," and the entire affair remains bewildering. It's surreal, certainly – occasionally amusing, I will say that; once you get past the surface level, the characters can be funny, but ultimately I felt it dragged on too long. The peculiarities of both the people involved and the story itself became excessive for my taste, and by the time the credits rolled, I wasn’t enjoying myself so much as feeling let down. I'll concede that I don't do well with movies that completely abandon reality – and this one absolutely does – but it wasn’t a terrible experience. Maybe watching it again on TV would help me understand it better, but I can’t honestly suggest it to anyone unless you have an inconsistent relationship with the world around us!
