Following a series of disturbing dreams at her coastal residence, the young Lois (Nina Foch) seeks assistance from the celebrated psychoanalyst Ordway (Warner Baxter). He travels to her large house and immediately experiences sleepwalking during his first night. Fortunately, Uncle George (George Zucco) locates him on the beach and guides him back home, where they find a corpse. Waking Lois, they return to the spot only to discover that the body has vanished! The situation is perplexing; what’s the meaning of the strange smoke that occasionally fills the rooms? Is Lois perhaps not entirely stable, or is George Zucco engaging in his characteristic villainous performances? I found this enjoyable—the dark setting by the sea, the appearance and disappearance of bodies, and a certain spark between characters do suggest an outcome, but the mystery itself remains somewhat unexpected. The film’s production values are simple, and that applies to nearly everything else; however, it provides an hour of pleasant entertainment.
