Wuchak on Hell River

6/10 · Jun 25, 2023

A man raised in America, Rod Taylor, finds himself battling German forces as a commander within the National Liberation Army, also known as the Yugoslav Partisans. Adam West portrays a German captain who displays understanding toward the Serbians; his backstory reveals he’s Austrian and involved with a Jewish woman, Brioni Farrell. “Hell River” (1974), which has been released under several different names including “Guerilla Raid” and “The Partisan,” is a film produced in Serbo-Croatian that depicts World War II. Originally intended for Yugoslavian television as a three-hour broadcast, this version was created for distribution elsewhere. Drawing inspiration from actual occurrences, the movie follows a style similar to films like "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), "The Heroes of Telemark" (1965) and "Hornets' Nest" (1970). It shares characteristics with later movies such as “Force 10 from Navarone” (1978) and “The Eagle Has Landed” (1976). While it doesn’t quite reach the quality of those films, it is still executed effectively and isn't far removed from them. It seems likely that the extended version would be more captivating. Notably, brief clips from "Hell River" appear in Quentin Tarantino's “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2019), incorporated into a fictional movie called "The 14 Fists of McCluskey," an Italian production where Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) had a part because he wasn’t able to secure substantial roles in the United States. The film's runtime is 1 hour and 42 minutes, and filming took place in Serbia—specifically Sabac, Lazarevac, Mountain Zlatibor, and River Drina near Bosnia. GRADE: B-/B
