Dan_Tebasco on Red Hook Summer

6/10 · Apr 21, 2017

The film begins well, though the central portion loses some focus and only occasionally offers moments of excitement; however, it recovers toward the conclusion with an unanticipated shift in feeling that made it somewhat more engaging. Despite not being fully centered on religious themes, references to God and Jesus appear frequently throughout; there are actually more scenes containing these allusions than those without them. The musical score is quite good, but at times I thought leaving some moments silent would have been preferable, as the music felt constant. Spike Lee does tend to rely too heavily on music in his films generally. Certain sequences, particularly those involving the preacher, were excessively lengthy and outstayed their welcome. The performances are generally strong; Clarke Peters’ portrayal of the bishop is a standout, although the younger actors weren't as impressive—especially the actress who played Chazz... 'Ooooooooooooooh!'. It’s an acceptable film, considerably better than ‘Da Sweet Blood of Jesus’ and perhaps even marginally superior to ‘ChiRaq’, but it doesn't reach the level of Spike Lee’s earlier, stronger work. 5. 5/10… a barely passing 3/5.
