Wuchak on Blood Freak

4/10 · Jun 20, 2023

A man resembling Elvis (Steve Hawkes) gets a job at a poultry farm near Miami, quickly finding himself involved with two sisters—one portrayed as innocent (Heather Hughes), the other alluring (Dana Cullivan)—while also becoming part of experiments conducted by researchers. Chaos follows. “Blood Freak,” made in 1972, is an independent film featuring a monster and working with very limited funds; it suffers from poor performances. However, Steve Hawkes brings charisma to his role as the character inspired by Presley; the problem lies with the supporting cast, particularly the scientists. The movie does well regarding its female characters, though I wish Heather Hughes’s part had been more substantial. Dana Cullivan is fine in her role as the dark-haired woman who tempts, and there's also a blonde actress in a minor role. It's peculiar that director Brad Grinter makes appearances throughout to provide philosophical observations while smoking. His last scene offers an amusing perspective. The movie’s message seems to be against drug use and unexpectedly supports biblical teachings, with passages from the Scriptures woven into the story amidst all the craziness. The soundtrack is also quite good. Despite its shortcomings, the plot feels slow-moving, and the film's better aspects don't manage to overshadow that central problem, which is made worse by the low quality of the filmmaking. It’s still potentially worth seeing for people who enjoy terrible movies or those interested in very small-budget oddities. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 20 minutes and was filmed in Miami, Florida. GRADE: C-/D+
