The film occupies a space between movies like "Porky's" and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” falling short of both but not being quite as unpleasant as the former. The story revolves around a 14-year-old in Hickory, North Carolina, who obtains video recording equipment and quickly begins filming his attractive neighbor and other women. "Getting It On," originally titled “American Voyeur,” was filmed over twenty-four days in October of 1982 for $220,000—roughly equivalent to $693,000 when adjusted for inflation. This teen sex dramedy isn't as overtly shocking as "Porky's," released two years earlier, but it’s also not as easily enjoyed as “Valley Girl,” settling somewhere in the middle. There's a certain charm to seeing this coming-of-age story unfold during the 1980s, and there are several attractive women featured (with three brief shots of partial nudity). Despite some awkwardness inherent in its focus on sex, it seems to possess a genuine kindness at its core; however, it doesn't reach the level of quality seen in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Nevertheless, it’s better than the “American Pie” movies. There are also moments that stand out, such as when the main character, his best friend, and the friend's older brother sneak into a local costume party—an adult event where attendees are dressed as members of the Ku Klux Klan—and no one questions it. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes and was filmed in Hickory, which is located an hour northwest of Charlotte on the western side of North Carolina. GRADE: C
