Ronald Colman portrays a weary World War I veteran, Capt. Drummond, who finds himself drawn into a situation when Joan Bennett, playing Phyllis Benton, asks for his assistance in rescuing her uncle from a care home. She suspects he’s being unjustly confined as part of a scheme to extract funds. Drummond, known for his refined demeanor, investigates the circumstances surrounding the elderly man's confinement and attempts to liberate him from Irma Peterson (Lilyan Tashman) and her associates. Being Colman’s initial sound film appearance is noticeable; the conversations feel somewhat unnatural, the acting is deliberately formal, and the narrative concerning this upright, resolute gentleman follows a very foreseeable path. Despite that, there’s an undeniable appeal to it, and Tashman delivers a commendable performance as the antagonist. It stands out as my preferred installment among the "Bulldog" films which earned Colman an Academy Award nomination.
