The casting choices aren’t immediately apparent, yet the interaction between the character resembling Calamity Jane, "Mary Stuart" (played by Eleanor Parker), and the trapper "Bushrod" (Robert Taylor) proves to be rather effective. He's a man who attracts attention and finds himself in trouble with some Native Americans while out in the Kentucky wilderness; fortunately, she intervenes and saves him. She then brings him back to her family’s settlement where she resides with her father, "Cadmus" (Victor McLaglen, playing a somewhat restrained role), and her four brothers. The family welcomes him, he enjoys their company—and his stay extends beyond what was initially intended, leading to a lighthearted, comedic push-and-pull dynamic with "Mary Stuart." This is a woman who’s set on winning over the man she wants! While the plot follows a familiar path, there are enjoyable adventures involving the Native Americans and the brothers – including Russ Tamblyn – featuring plenty of fighting, archery, and tomahawks, alongside some entertaining role reversals and raccoon-themed scenes. The script feels somewhat overloaded, and director Roy Rowland has difficulty maintaining the brisk pace of the action and dialogue consistently throughout; however, it remains a pleasant film that offers an alternative perspective on settling in the West.
