This ninth installment of Hallmark’s ‘Love Comes Softly’ film series isn't based on any of Jannete Oke’s novels. As I mentioned in my review of the previous movie, the story concluded in the book, but it continued on screen because the filmmakers apparently received a positive response from viewers. Instead of progressing with the narrative, they opted to create prequels. This is the first of those two prequels, which will likely disappoint fans of the ‘Love Comes Softly’ books, though it might appeal to movie enthusiasts. I was initially excited about these prequels solely because I hoped to see Marty again—specifically, Katherine Heigl's return. That expectation proved disappointing, as this story focuses on Clark Davis’s backstory. Yes, the same man who offered his hand to Marty in the first film when she was lost and alone. While the original movie began by introducing Marty, I had wished that her perspective would be shared, but it didn't happen. This film tells us about Clark—where he came from and how he earned his place in a small town. It’s a gentle story, reminiscent of "all's well that ends well," and is definitely geared toward adults; teens and younger viewers probably won't enjoy it. The opening scene featured some brief action sequences resembling a Western film, but those quickly subsided. I suspect today’s teenagers would criticize this movie because they are accustomed to CGI and superhero films. They might find the theme outdated, which could be why the series transitioned into television programming aimed at women and families. > "We gotta hang on to the good ones... > Let the bad ones go. Never let 'em haunt us." There are several reasons this film feels unremarkable, but it’s easily acceptable for television viewing. I didn't find any significant issues with it; it was a pleasant movie with a moral message that I enjoyed. Everything felt well-organized and like another adaptation of a book. It wouldn't be a bad idea to turn it into one, provided Jannete Oke approves, so readers who haven’t seen the films can have a chance to experience the story. The plot was straightforward; in fact, someone unfamiliar with the series could begin with this film and its sequel before watching the original movies. However, I wouldn't recommend that approach. Regardless of the order, it’s best to watch them as they were released because the efforts made to connect the prequels with the original films can be confusing when viewed chronologically. The casting was excellent; everyone gave a commendable performance. Movies like this are rare these days, which is likely why I find this series appealing. I'm looking forward to the next two films. While it’s not an overwhelmingly exceptional movie, I won’t give it a perfect score. What initially drew me in—surprisingly—was its genre, which is typically associated with action, adventure, crime, and thrillers. Another wonderful addition to the series, so credit should go to the writers and director. Two more films remain; see you at the next review. 7½/10
