Wuchak on Zuma Beach

6/10 · Dec 3, 2025

The film centers around Suzanne Somers, then 30, portraying a rock singer whose career is on the decline; she travels to a Malibu beach hoping to regain her creative spark by observing younger people, primarily high school students. It’s an enjoyable drama that tackles serious themes while maintaining a lighthearted atmosphere, setting it apart from typical comedic beach movies of the 1960s. Interestingly, many have forgotten that the initial "beach party" film was actually “Gidget” from 1959—starring Sandra Dee—which possessed a surprising amount of emotional depth rather than being purely silly. This movie shares similarities with that earlier “Gidget,” but incorporates the feel of Sam Elliott’s “Lifeguard” from 1976. Essentially, it's like a TV adaptation of "California Dreaming," which premiered roughly seven months afterward. Although considered the weakest of these films because it was made for television, there are still things to appreciate about it. Watching it gives you the sensation of having spent an afternoon at a Southern California beach. While Suzanne Somers looks great, she wasn’t particularly appealing to me; I prefer Kimberly Beck, who plays Cathy and has a fuller figure. Other recognizable young actors include Mark Wheeler, Michael Biehn, Rosanna Arquette, Tanya Roberts, and PJ Soles. Janus Blythe is credited as Jennifer, but her role is so small that I didn't even notice her presence. She’s known for playing Ruby, the wild girl, in “The Hills Have Eyes,” and Lynette in "Eaten Alive." The film has a running time of approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes and was filmed at Paradise Cove, which is located 2.5 miles east of Zuma Beach, across from Point Dume—a landmark visible in the background. It’s worth noting that Point Dume was also the location for the memorable conclusion of “Planet of the Apes.” GRADE: B-/C+
