The film begins with an unusual notice explaining that it utilizes public domain characters and doesn't involve contact with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s estate—a technically sound approach, though it sparked a bit of apprehension about how much the established "Sherlock Holmes" (played by Matt Frewer) and "Dr. Watson" (Kenneth Welsh) would be altered. Ultimately, that initial curiosity proves to be the most engaging aspect of this production as the pair finds themselves investigating murders potentially committed by a vampire. While Frewer and Welsh don’t replicate the performances of Rathbone and Bruce, they do form an acceptable team within what is otherwise a fairly forgettable drama, seeming more influenced by "Cadfael" than by "The Hound of the Baskervilles." The mystery unfolds in a predictable manner, as one might anticipate from a ninety-minute TV movie, culminating in a resolution that felt reminiscent of “Scooby Doo.” It’s not awful; the production values are acceptable. However, the final result is disappointing, featuring lengthy exchanges and an abundance of characters that prevent viewers from feeling involved in solving the case. Perhaps it will appeal to dedicated enthusiasts of these well-known figures, but otherwise, it's simply something to watch during the day.
