This musical really appeals to me! It begins when a woman (Alison Fitzjohn) places an online ad seeking assistance for her unusual taxidermy project, and receives a reply from “Bernie” (Anthony Young). He’s determined to sidestep the aging process—what better method than achieving a form of lasting preservation? Upon arriving at her house, he's welcomed with tea and some songs that would have been right at home in Sondheim’s "Sweeney Todd," gently preparing both him and the audience for what’s ahead as an immediate emotional bond develops between them. The straightforward, somewhat bleak photography is surprisingly impactful, but it’s truly the lyrics that stand out; they skillfully blend morbid themes with clever rhymes and even a touch of tenderness.
