Louis Hayward provides an entertaining performance in this follow-up to "The Count of Monte Cristo," which borrows elements from films like “Zorro” and “Prisoner of Zenda.” The story unfolds in the made-up kingdom of Lichtenburg, where Grand Duchess Zona (Joan Bennett) holds power, but the villainous General Gurko Lanen (George Sanders) plots to seize control of her position. He arranges for her devoted Prime Minister (Montagu Love) to be removed so he can pursue her hand in marriage! Our protagonist then arrives with a mission to rescue the Princess and protect her nation from this ruthless adversary. The film is full of hidden routes, nefarious plans, and sword-fighting action; Sanders, Bennett—along with Florence Bates taking on a role similar to Una O’Connor's—seem to be enjoying themselves, which makes watching it more pleasurable. It may not offer any surprises, but director Rowland Lee maintains a brisk pace, the conversations are minimal (which is welcome), and Edward Ward’s musical score all add up to an enjoyable action-adventure experience.
