John Chard on Siege of the Saxons

5/10 · Jan 11, 2014

The tale of King Arthur is presented here in a whimsical, though ultimately flawed, British film. Nathan Juran helmed this production, which features Janette Scott and Ronald Lewis as its leads, and it's full of medieval silliness. Lewis portrays a character reminiscent of Robin Hood, traveling across the countryside with Scott’s princess, who is in disguise, on a quest to find Merlin (John Laurie). Their goal is to enlist the aid of the powerful wizard to thwart Edmund of Cornwall (Ronald Howard)’s scheme to usurp Arthur's throne—a plan that involves assistance from Saxon forces. The film aims for enjoyable entertainment, and the performers seem to be having a good time in their costumes (which appear to be recycled from other historical films), and Juran keeps the pace moving, understanding when to inject action or moments of levity into the proceedings. It’s essentially an inconsequential diversion. Viewed as a supporting attraction alongside Jason and the Argonauts, it provides a pleasant bit of entertainment. 5/10
