Douglas Fairbanks returns to the world he created with "The Three Musketeers" (1921), and this follow-up is noticeably stronger, centering on the matter of who will inherit Louis XIII’s France. The arrival of a son for Queen Anne (Belle Bennett) brings widespread joy across the country. However, few are aware that twins exist... To protect the kingdom, the second child is secretly taken to Spain at Cardinal Richelieu's (Nigel de Brulier) command, but not before the cunningly marked "Rochefort" (Ullrich Haupt) learns of this secret. Some time passes – after nearly everyone connected to them has died – and he kidnaps the boy from his Spanish refuge, replacing him with an entirely different King on the French throne while condemning the rightful heir to a terrible imprisonment behind a mask. Somehow, the captive manages to send word to his faithful Captain D'Artagnan (a somewhat heavier Fairbanks by this point), and so begins a frantic effort to rescue and reinstate him. As far as I can remember, this version of Alexandre Dumas’ story begins with the good king before introducing the false one, rather than jumping straight into the deception – and that makes for a much quicker start. de Brulier's portrayal of Richelieu is an improvement over his earlier performance; he's constantly clashing with those troublesome—though somewhat older—musketeers, and aided by the scheming "Milady de Winter" (Dorothy Revier), there are some worthwhile side stories that keep the action moving at a brisk tempo. The visuals also contribute to that pace, offering plenty of gunfights, swordplay, explosions, and plotting to maintain excitement. Brief inter-titles help with the dialogue but don't distract from what is fundamentally an exciting adventure for boys. It’s certainly worth seeing, and in my opinion, it's the finest adaptation of "The Man in the Iron Mask" that exists.
