This unusual Western film, set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution, features Lee Van Cleef as a bank robber whose marriage to a woman portrayed by Gina Lollobrigida doesn’t go as planned. His subsequent involvement in a plot to rob funds intended for replacing an army arsenal brings James Mason into the story later on. "Bad Man's River," made collaboratively by Italy, France and Spain in 1971, is a strange Western comedy reminiscent of American films such as "McLintock," "Cat Ballou," “Texas Across the River,” "Support Your Local Sheriff," and “Little Big Man.” It may be the most ridiculous film among those examples, and it anticipates "Blazing Saddles" while maintaining characteristics typical of European Westerns. The music is silly but enjoyable, and there’s plenty of action mixed with the humorous elements; Gina Lollobrigida and Diana Lorys (as Dolores) are visually appealing as well. While I would probably choose “Texas Across the River” or "The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox" when seeking a funny Western, I do appreciate the film's exaggerated absurdity. The movie has a running time of one hour and 31 minutes and was filmed in Spain. GRADE: B-/C+
