The inclusion of an unusual version of “Waltzing Matilda” is perplexing – I’m not certain why the film would be named as such, but it shouldn't deter anyone from watching, because it concerns speedway racing, not something else entirely. Dirk Bogarde is exceptionally charming in his role as "Bill," a man who loses his job testing lightbulbs and subsequently finds himself drawn to dirt-track speedway. He quickly realizes he has an aptitude for the sport, soon earning £90 per week, and without the disruption of World War II, he might have become a significant champion. However, after the war concludes, his wife, "Pat" (Renée Asherson), presents him with a difficult choice when he’s unable to find even simple work like delivering milk. What decision will he ultimately make? The film benefits from a talented ensemble cast including James Hayter, Moira Lister, Bill Owen, Sid James, Thora Hird and Bonar Colleano; there's also sufficient racing footage to illustrate how incredibly popular – and hazardous – the sport was at the time, attracting crowds of thousands seeking thrills. While the romantic elements occasionally feel distracting, particularly a certain storyline involving "Lister," it’s largely a well-crafted, briskly paced drama that delicately explores the limited options available to many soldiers returning home.
