The initial credits listing Sir Alexander Korda and David O. Selznick immediately suggests something about this romantic story – namely, that it feels a little disjointed. Jennifer Jones portrays "Hazel," a young woman deeply connected to the natural world, especially her fox cub companion, “Foxy.” She eventually marries the local vicar, "Marston" (Cyril Cusack), but her beauty and untamed spirit draw unwanted attention, including from the local squire, "Jack" (David Farrar). After being spurned, he manipulates the villagers’ puritanical beliefs to create animosity toward Hazel, leading to a tragic outcome. Powell and Pressburger maintain their standard of quality with this visually striking film; the colors, costumes, and outdoor landscapes are particularly well done. However, the performances aren't consistently strong. While it’s clear Farrar’s character desires Hazel, his acting doesn’t really convey that feeling. Owen Holder’s narration proves to be a needless distraction, and there’s an abundance of unnecessary material which stretches out the narrative – while often beautiful to watch, it frequently drags on at a very slow speed. Dame Sybil Thorndike delivers a solid performance as Hazel's disapproving mother-in-law, and Hugh Griffith and George Cole offer some enjoyable supporting roles, but ultimately the film lacks the drive needed to truly succeed. It’s possible that Selznick removed key elements when he reviewed it, but regardless, this isn't among the Archers' most significant works.
