John Chard on Dark Intruder

7/10 · Oct 16, 2017

A wild time unfolds in San Francisco. Harvey Hart directed Dark Intruder, with Barre Lyndon writing the screenplay. The cast includes Leslie Nielsen, Gilbert Green, Charles Bolender, Mark Richman, Judith Meredith and Werner Klemperer. Lalo Schifrin handled the music, and John F. Warren was responsible for the cinematography. In 1890 San Francisco, a killer is creating fear, drawing the attention of Brett Kingsford (Nielsen), who specializes in unusual matters. Originally intended as an episode for a television series that didn’t get further development, Dark Intruder delivers a considerable amount of eerie entertainment. The film runs just under an hour and compensates for any shortcomings in originality with over-the-top silliness. The atmosphere is striking because of the historical setting—lots of fog, shadows, and gaslights—and the story incorporates elements like deities, Eastern mysticism, and Sumerian demons. A little person, a creepy fortune teller, and a mandrake plant also contribute to the film's oddball charm. There’s even an unexpected twist at the end, avoiding predictability. I definitely suggest checking it out. 6.5/10
