I’ve always associated India with newspapers, but I hadn't fully realized that much of that journalism was controlled by men from privileged caste backgrounds, overlooking the Dalit women who started their own publication in Uttar Pradesh. The three women at the center of this film demonstrate considerable courage as they investigate violence against women—a problem often ignored, particularly by a police force seemingly unconcerned with the suffering of those whose assaults are framed as family honor disputes. This documentary unfolds against the backdrop of upcoming elections where the current government is anticipated to remain in power, but their inquiries directed at authority figures and everyday citizens reveal deep-seated attitudes that have persisted for generations. The film’s aim is to illustrate how many women experience conditions similar to those of enslaved people; a significant portion of their difficulties appear rooted in historical practices where they were considered the possessions of fathers or husbands—treated as property to be used, abused, exchanged, or disregarded at will. Meera Devi is committed to bringing attention to these injustices and, despite potential risks to herself and her colleagues, tries to challenge prevailing attitudes among many people with limited education. It’s also revealing to observe the diminishing influence of traditional media outlets and how rapidly social media can shape public opinion, impacting politicians, law enforcement, and the courts regarding fairness and equal treatment under a selectively enforced legal system. The documentary's personal approach draws you directly into the events, and the interview style feels genuine, often deeply moving. One man is asked, "What has God to do with politics?" That’s quite a question.
