The film draws from real events, and it’s possible that it intends to comment on the US military’s past prejudice against those who didn't fit a specific mold during the Vietnam War—a pattern seen in other conflicts as well. However, this doesn't justify how the story of these men has been handled. David Garber ("Sgt. Alexander") and Michael Southworth ("Sgt. Reese") are tasked with spearheading a covert CIA operation while contending with both a determined adversary and internal conflict stemming from their own developing sexuality and their colleague’s reactions to it—all while enduring constant danger in a challenging environment. The storytelling feels disjointed. Weak direction, an uninspired musical score, underwhelming writing, and stiff performances all combine to create a fundamentally forgettable movie that seems unsure of its audience or purpose, aside from presenting a message that's painfully apparent. While many films about this war highlight tragedy and violence, most manage to do so with greater clarity than this vapid melodrama, which employs a gay storyline as a superficial way to mask flawed wartime storytelling. The production values appear limited; much of the film seems to have been shot on location in an amateur setting. Perhaps it would be best left there. It's quite disappointing.
