I typically don’t anticipate much from films made for German public television, ZDF, but this one turned out to be surprisingly good. The performances are adequate. The plot isn’t too far-fetched considering it’s a fairy tale film intended for children. Production quality is solid, and the music is quite nice—I especially appreciate the musical choices used for the witches. A few points I want to specifically address: Jerry Hoffmann's portrayal of Prince Tanka is presented as a prince from another kingdom; consequently, his skin tone doesn’t feel out of place within this medieval European fairy tale setting. There’s some intentional exaggeration in the performances of the evil witches, which might not appeal to everyone, but I found it enjoyable. The film avoids trying to reinterpret past morals and social conventions through a modern lens—at least, not significantly. I only experienced the German version of this movie, so I can't comment on any possible translations. Ultimately, it’s simply an entertaining adventure that the entire family can enjoy; there isn’t some profound message being conveyed.
