Wuchak on The Night of Bloody Horror

6/10 · Dec 31, 2025

This film presents a depiction of killings carried out by an individual targeting young women in New Orleans during 1969. Directed by Joy N. Houck Jr., it’s a psychological horror drama that follows the established style of films like “Psycho,” but presented with vibrant color and set against the backdrop of the late 1960s, including a nightclub scene showcasing The Bored. Gerald McRaney takes on the role of the central character who is experiencing difficulties, marking his first appearance in a feature film. Even though he’d been confined to an institution for thirteen years and was recently released at age 26, he seems remarkably skilled at drawing attractive women into his life and forming intimate relationships. It's hard not to think of him as having a natural charm, regardless of the mental health challenges he faces. The production style shares similarities with Peter Bogdanovich’s “Targets.” Those who enjoy films like "Twisted Nerve" or "The House That Screamed," along with similar late 1960s thrillers, will likely find something to appreciate here; however, it doesn't quite measure up due to its unusual slow pace. What it does have is a certain artistic quality, and the female characters are visually appealing in keeping with the aesthetics of the era. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 18 minutes and was filmed on location in New Orleans. GRADE: B-
