Pakistani cinema has struggled since the eighties, and Slackistan represents one of numerous independent films attempting to bring it back—though with limited success. The film takes place in Islamabad, sometimes referred to as Islo, a city constructed by former dictator Ayub Khan to separate the wealthy from everyone else; it also functions as the country’s capital and is where many of Pakistan's wealthiest families reside. The depiction of four young adults—affluent, influenced by Western culture, and lacking direction—feels realistic. Islamabad is often described as "The Dead City" due to its lack of cultural venues like theaters or cinemas; therefore, residents spend their time socializing, driving around, and generally passing the hours. The narrative follows these four individuals and focuses on one’s journey out of a slacker lifestyle. The soundtrack includes music from various independent Pakistani bands, and it marks the director's first project. However, the film doesn’t quite succeed because its humor is too localized; many jokes would likely be missed by audiences unfamiliar with Pakistani culture. Ultimately, it feels like a movie created by Islamabad residents for Islamabad residents. P.S. The film has been prohibited in Pakistan. A strange situation, wouldn't you say?
