Peter McGinn on When Harvey Met Bob

6/10 · May 12, 2021

I found this to be pretty enjoyable when it wasn't frustrating me, and I have to admit that my frustration stemmed entirely from Bob Geldof’s portrayal. I understand he was the innovative, principled (when it benefited him) punk rocker who created and managed the incredible event that was Live Aid, and he certainly deserves all the praise he receives. However, as the film unfolded, Harvey started to stand out from Geldof's presence and became the true protagonist in my view. I can’t imagine how he tolerated his counterpart’s childish, inflexible displays of ego, who seemed prepared to risk everything by pushing someone else to back down first. I also acknowledge that this isn't a film about the music itself but rather focuses on the organization and preparation needed to make it happen. Nevertheless, whenever I heard snippets from the Live Aid artists, I hoped they would play the full tracks. And what’s the story with Geldof’s wife or girlfriend? Did she lack any distinct characteristics? A few more scenes featuring her might have offered some insight into how the hero is perceived in his personal life. I did have problems with this movie, but it's worth seeing at least once, everyone.
