It seems like throughout nearly the entire movie, James Cagney is mainly found in William Bendix’s bar, “Nick’s,” observing people and spending his cash; everyone who enters has a story. The film unfolds at a deliberate speed; Cagney takes on an almost wise figure as he sends his loyal but not overly bright friend "Tom" (Wayne Morris) off on different tasks while listening to the experiences of others—like an aspiring dancer (Paul Draper), a cowboy possibly affected by too much sun (James Barton), and someone who enjoys sharing information (Ward Bond). It does eventually reach a peak, though that isn’t really important; there's not much action to be found—it's more about watching the normal events of each day with just enough added interest to hold attention. There’s also a cameo from Cagney’s sister, Jeanne, at the very end as the romantic focus for the attentive "Tom."
