CinemaSerf on The Conquest of Everest

It’s easy to recall Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's names, but I feel that in this instance, the expedition's cinematographer, George Lowe, deserves particular recognition. He vividly portrays the dangerous and challenging journey they all faced in 1953 when striving to be the first individuals to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The story begins with the preparatory work done in London, expanding on earlier unsuccessful attempts at reaching that peak. Following this, there's the challenge of arranging how to transport massive quantities of vital equipment to base camps located as high as the summits of many European mountains. The film effectively demonstrates the absence of oxygen, constant winds and extreme cold; I actually felt the need to grab a sweater during the later parts, as the harshness of this avalanche-prone landmark—a symbol of nature’s power—became apparent and it seemed weary of these temporary visitors seeking refuge in fragile tents while consuming freeze-dried meals that would make today's instant noodles seem like gourmet cuisine! Meredith Edwards’ narration and Arthur Benjamin’s inspiring musical score also enhance the feeling of genuine adventure. Despite beginning with newspaper headlines announcing the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation, the filmmakers still succeed in creating a sense of peril throughout the ascent. More than seventy years on, this film continues to highlight the perseverance and resolve of those who climbed it simply because "it is there."
