HBO’s initial exploration of the life of Roy Cohn, CITIZEN COHN, arrived before the later, better-known ANGELS IN AMERICA, appearing in 1992. Though the 2003 miniseries featured prominent actors, this earlier production also assembled a noteworthy group of performers. Director Frank Pierson, who wrote COOL HAND LUKE and DOG DAY AFTERNOON, guides viewers through a story featuring James Woods, Joe Don Baker, Lee Grant, Frederic Forrest, and numerous other experienced character actors. The film traces Cohn’s life from his privileged childhood to his final days, revealing actions that were consistently ruthless, unethical, aggressive, and damaging; it's easy to see how this portrayal makes current political discourse appear straightforward and even pleasant by comparison. Credit David Franzoni for the sharp writing; this is a captivatingly unpleasant narrative that follows a dark path where power and a lack of conscience meet—and reveals the consequences left in their wake.
