The current concerns about global warming and the increasing visibility of environmental documentaries have brought back memories of the science fiction and dystopian movies I watched as a kid growing up in Canada during the 1970s. A lot of those films seemed to feel the need for heightened drama, or maybe reflected the political instability of the late sixties, and portrayed futures that were incredibly harsh and unlikely to be survived or sustained. 'Idaho Transfer' fits into that tradition. Director Fonda clearly has a gift, and the film’s visuals are striking considering its limited budget. The concepts involving time travel felt fresh and original, and even though the music sounds old-fashioned, I found it fitting. Fonda understood that, similar to how the setting and the teenagers’ isolation needed space to develop, the ideas themselves required room to unfold and reveal their complexities. While the performers aren't seasoned professionals, the casting was effective because of Fonda’s naturalistic style, which felt almost like a documentary. The film’s sense of hopelessness—the idea that even if science could theoretically rescue humanity, people might not be able to cope with the notion of an ideal world—highlights how art and politics are intertwined, and emphasizes the importance of acting now and supporting what's truly vital for humankind while we still have a chance and a planet worth preserving. I really hope Fonda made more movies! =)
