Convict Red Kluger makes a break from Folsom Prison tonight in The Threat, directed by Felix E. Feist and featuring a script by Dick Irving Hyland and Hugh King. The cast includes Charles McGraw, Virginia Grey, Michael O’Shea, and Julie Bishop, with music composed by Paul Sawtell and cinematography by Harry J. Wild. The story centers on Kluger's plan to kidnap the individuals he blames for his imprisonment after escaping from jail. Running just a little over an hour, The Threat largely showcases Charles McGraw’s developing skill at playing tough characters. After establishing the escape and initial plot points, the film primarily takes place in one confined location where Kluger and his accomplices hold four people hostage—the fourth being a truck driver who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A sense of danger hangs heavy in the air, creating a stifling atmosphere as the situation escalates through torture, violence, and psychological manipulation, building to an intense finale without unnecessary distractions. While not particularly striking visually, and with some moments where characters act strangely, it’s still a solid “B” noir film that's worth seeing, primarily for McGraw’s performance. It earns a 7/10.
