The film carries an earnest message—a surprisingly progressive perspective on racial equality for its time during World War II. However, the lackluster production really holds it back. Buster Crabbe’s performance as "Ray" is particularly lifeless, and the gorilla suit doesn't help matters. The plot revolves around a hunter searching for jewels that were lost when an airplane crashed years before in the African jungle. He finds them held by Julie London, who plays "Doreen"—also known as the "White Witch"—the daughter of the original thief. She’s unwilling to give up the jewels, and as he develops feelings for her, his friend Barton MacLane ("Carl") shows up wanting the treasure for himself, leading to conflict between the two men. It's strange to see Crabbe in a role where he isn't portrayed as purely virtuous, and initially the story is fairly interesting; but soon the obvious limitations of the studio set—the fake plants and poor lighting—along with a rather plain script, highlight "Crash" Corrigan’s costume, which is always problematic. It's not terrible, and it moves along at a reasonable speed, but ultimately it's too ordinary to stick in your mind.
