Trevor Howard seems perfectly suited to playing "Lt. Cdr. Fraser," who leads a run-down former US Navy destroyer – now called HMS Ballantrae – and whose adherence to regulations and formal demeanor with his crew creates friction. Over time, however, and after several setbacks for the ship, he starts to gain their respect before they carry out their task of striking at a dry dock controlled by the Nazis. A strong supporting cast featuring James Donald, Bernard Lee, and Richard Attenborough contributes to maintaining a brisk and engaging tempo. The film’s latter portion draws from an actual raid on St. Nazaire and provides a fairly thrilling experience. I found it enjoyable.
