It seemed like a smart choice for Charles Gaskill to select this subject matter. It possesses everything needed for a lavish film—the costumes, the elaborate settings, and most significantly, a narrative that audiences will already know. This certainly helps, because the remainder of this nearly 110-year-old movie is genuinely experimental. Objectively speaking, it isn't particularly well-made. Helen Gardner’s portrayal of the main character feels devoid of any real feeling; her gaze seldom connects with the lens and her movements often struck me as resembling something akin to stage acting. The camera work remains almost entirely still—there are no sweeping shots or close-ups, nothing to visually convey the emotions that this story could evoke. Unfortunately, that performance makes it feel quite dull at times. Nevertheless, there's ambition present, and the methods employed show creative efforts by cinematographer Lucien Tainguy to try something new, though not with a great deal of success. Those interested in how cinema evolved should view this; it’s a good illustration of fundamental lighting and editing techniques, along with appropriately placed title cards, which I believe you'll find worthwhile for what it is: very, very early!
