The film presents an engaging account of the experiences of sailors and airmen on an American aircraft carrier in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Their assignment involves a unique objective: to maneuver around the Pacific, creating the illusion of a scattered and disorganized fleet while other vessels secretly gather near Midway for a major confrontation. This deceptive mission presents challenges for the crew, requiring them to remain visible to the enemy but avoid direct engagement—a precarious situation intensified by their desire for retribution against those who killed their fellow servicemen. Don Ameche portrays "Harper," responsible for overseeing an air crew headed by Dana Andrews ("Moulton"), a group that includes several unconventional individuals resistant to rules and order. Notable among them are William Eythe, playing the attractive "Scott," and Kevin O'Shea as "Cookie," recently honored with a Presidential citation—both possessing their own agendas concerning the war effort. The storyline follows a familiar pattern: young men initially clash with their leader but eventually learn to appreciate his methods before culminating in a large-scale battle. The performances are generally unremarkable; while Charles Bickford and Sir Cedric Hardwicke contribute moments of seriousness, it’s primarily the aerial footage and combat sequences that elevate the film. These scenes are impressive, featuring skillfully choreographed maneuvers combined with authentic shots that convey a realistic sense of danger. However, the story progresses slowly, failing to introduce anything fresh to its established category.
