Patrick E. Abe on Wing and a Prayer

6/10 · Sep 22, 2016

Following Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy found itself spread out across the Pacific, facing a difficult choice: protect the American West Coast or attempt to deliver a significant blow against Japan. The film centers on an unnamed aircraft carrier—a combination of the U.S.S. Enterprise and U.S.S. Lexington—which undertakes several maneuvers intended to demonstrate its presence, but these actions lead to losses among the flight crews. Alongside the main action, there are smaller stories that illustrate what life was like aboard ship in 1942, as the sailors and pilots waited for an opportunity to engage the opposition. The story becomes more intense when the fleet converges near Midway Island with the goal of confronting the Japanese navy. Initial attacks don’t go well, but eventually they are successful, resulting in losses for the enemy's ships and planes. Then, it is the carrier’s turn to be targeted as Japanese bombers try to destroy it. The movie was produced while the Pacific conflict was still ongoing, shortly after the Battle of Midway; consequently, some of the aircraft shown are later versions. It serves as an exciting war adventure intended to encourage people to buy war bonds. 6.5/10
