After intervening in an attack on a woman outside her home, "Blackie" (Chester Morris) and his partner, the "Runt" (George E. Stone), discover she’s “Gerry” (Lynn Merrick), someone he used to know—and she has a baby! Questions quickly arise: who is the father? Who harmed her, and why? Before long, gunshots erupt, and both "Insp. Farraday" (Richard Lane) and "Blackie" are racing to identify those responsible, though the police officer predictably arrives at an incorrect assumption. The film moves along smoothly with familiar characters navigating a predictable detective storyline that includes misleading clues leading up to a very obvious resolution. While the script is serviceable, the actors manage to make it engaging for roughly 60 minutes, and there's sufficient suspense regarding the shooter’s identity until close to the end. Morris seemed perfectly suited to this film series, displaying his usual charm and charisma, and Stone’s attempt at imitating Jimmy Durante adds to its appeal.
