I had reservations initially regarding Jeff Chandler’s portrayal of a boxing champion prone to fits of anger, but his performance is acceptable. He plays “Coke,” a former coal miner with aspirations of marrying his sweetheart "Rose" (Evelyn Keyes) and opening a radio shop. His brother, "George" (Stephen McNally), who operates a pool hall, realizes that when Coke becomes truly enraged, his fists can speak for him. Consequently, the boxing ring calls to him, bringing success – though not without consequences. “Coke” is portrayed as a rough individual; he fights within the rules but resorts to underhanded tactics, and the audience gradually begins to dislike him. Eventually, he decides he wants to quit, only to find that his wife has become involved in some match-fixing scheme with "George," placing him in a difficult situation—a point highlighted at the end during a fight against Rock Hudson ("Speed"), who is also an improbable boxer. It’s another story unfolding within a town where prospects were limited and boxing provided a means of escape for those willing to endure punishment. The film attempts to explore the idea of morality through the main character, and the cinematography does convey the violence inherent in the ring. Overall, it's a well-made movie with enough action and a moral message about distinguishing between what is right and wrong.
