From hardship emerges victory. James Erskine wrote and directed *From the Ashes*, which features narration by Tom Hardy. The documentary examines the England versus Australia Test Cricket Series from 1981. "I think I'll bring the Gorilla on at the far end." *From the Ashes* is a must-see for cricket enthusiasts, regardless of their team allegiance. It highlights not only the considerable abilities of England’s greatest all-rounder, Ian Botham, but also explains why cricket holds such appeal for devoted fans. The documentary isn't solely about the sport itself; it demonstrates how athletes can influence an entire nation. Brearley served as Botham's Spock to his Kirk. The 1981 Ashes series unfolded against a backdrop of social unrest, with strikes, riots, and widespread unemployment occurring under Thatcher’s government. Britain was in decline, and as the England cricket team, struggling with Botham’s performance and facing criticism from the press, fell behind an exuberant Australia, interest waned and attendance dropped. In mid-July, England seemed destined for defeat, but then key players (Botham and Bob Willis) stepped up; out of darkness came light. The Headingley miracle not only turned around a series that England would ultimately win, but also brought smiles back to the faces of working-class Britons who had forgotten how to smile. The documentary includes thoughtful contributions from prominent Australians involved in that series—they are characters in their own right—and Erskine doesn't simply celebrate Britain; a later segment reminds us about how Australian captain Kim Hughes (a skilled batsman) also experienced hardship within the sport. There are numerous stories, rivalries, and surprising revelations, accompanied by a soundtrack featuring The Clash, Ten Pole Tudour, The Specials, The Police, New Order, and Squeeze, which perfectly captures the atmosphere. The sound design and editing are excellent—the use of short audio clips paired with still photographs to convey dramatic moments is particularly effective—and Hardy’s narration suggests he's a worthy successor to Brian Blessed! Increasingly, athletes in other sports fail to grasp how their efforts can uplift a nation during difficult times, inspiring people to play for pride rather than financial gain. At its heart, *From the Ashes* explores this theme; it is a tribute to reaching one’s full potential and serving as an inspiration, even if only briefly. 9/10
