It’s easy to feel sorry for Edmund Purdom, portraying the Crown Prince of Karslberg, who's facing a marriage arranged to save his family line, with someone he doesn’t know or care for. But first, he decides he wants to experience something akin to an ordinary existence and enrolls at Heidelberg University. At first appearing regal and commanding, he encounters Ann Blyth ("Kathie"), the innkeeper’s niece, and begins a genuine romance. While neither Purdom nor Blyth were particularly strong performers, this sweet love story benefits from a solid supporting ensemble – Louis Calhern as the King, Edmund Gwenn as his clever counselor "Prof. Juttner," and John Williams in a delightful role as valet and all-around helper – and snob – "Lutz." The film also features bright, vibrant visuals alongside Mario Lanza’s singing of Purdom's musical numbers in songs like "Drink, Drink, Drink!" and the appropriately majestic "I Walk with God!". With more appealing leads, it might have left a stronger impression, but as it stands, it is pleasant to view, though even better to hear.
