Roy Rogers appears almost too perfect, like he stepped directly out of a high school barn dance – which, surprisingly, works well. Gabby Hayes provides a welcome dose of authenticity and roughness to a fairly straightforward story about westward expansion and conflicts between American settlers and established Spanish landowners in California. There's a good amount of action sequences, a wicked plot involving betrayal and deceit, and the musical numbers weren’t as bothersome or prevalent as I anticipated. However, Rogers’ portrayal of a hero feels excessively virtuous; it represents more what Americans wanted to believe their pioneering ancestors were like than an accurate depiction of who they really were, leaving me with a somewhat cloying impression.
